Trisha Yearwood shared the surprising feedback she received in college when she appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Friday (February 21).

Yearwood, one of country music’s most beloved icons for decades, told Kelly Clarkson that she never considered herself to be a songwriter. She said in a clip from the show: “I’ve always written a little bit, but I’ve never called myself a songwriter. And in fact, I usually will say, if someone says ‘we should write,’ I’m like, ‘I’m not a songwriter.’ Because someone told me when I was in college that I was not a songwriter. And I let it be the truth for, you know, just like 45 years. …I sort of had an ‘a-ha (moment)’ about like, ’well, why does that have to be the truth?’”

Yearwood continued, saying that for longtime fans who have known her “and known my music for a long time, and think they know me — and they do — but I think this will be like, ‘oh, here’s something about her we didn’t know.’ Here’s something new, a new layer to it.” Together, the pair also spoke about touring, clearing up “rumors” that Yearwood and Garth Brooks would move to Ireland, and more.

Yearwood is getting ready to release a new album and kick off her first tour in more than five years. The spring tour includes singer-songwriters Erin Enderlin and Sunny Sweeney, “two of my co-writing pals on this new album,” Yearwood said when she announced earlier this week that Enderlin and Sweeney would join her on the road. “I can’t wait for you to hear these amazingly talented women as they take the stage on my spring tour. You’re in for a treat!” See the dates here. Watch the interview from The Kelly Clarkson Show below.
